Sri Lanka is arguably the best family destination in Asia right now. Why? Because it packs everything – wild elephants, misty mountains, golden beaches, and ancient culture – all in one compact island.
For families travelling from the UAE, India, or Malaysia, it is the perfect “short-haul” escape. The flights are short, the visa process is simple (often free or low-cost), and the diversity is unmatched.
At Travel Plans, we specialize in crafting comfortable, safe, and exciting journeys for families. We know that traveling with kids requires a different pace – less rushing, more swimming pools, and activities that keep everyone engaged.
Here is our curated 8-Day “Classic Family Loop” that covers the three big hits: Culture, Wildlife, and Coastline.
Day 1: Arrival & The Gentle Giants
-
Arrive: Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB).
-
The Drive: Transfer to Kandy (approx. 3 hours).
Welcome to the tropics! Your private Travel Plans Chauffeur Guide will meet you at the arrivals hall. We use spacious, air-conditioned vans for families to ensure plenty of legroom and space for luggage.
The Highlight: On the way to Kandy, we stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.
-
For the Kids: Watch the herd march to the river for their daily bath. It is a mesmerizing sight and a perfect “welcome to Sri Lanka” moment for the little ones.
Stay: A family-friendly boutique hotel in Kandy with a pool.
Day 2: Sacred Teeth & Botanical Gardens
-
Morning: Visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. It’s vast, safe, and perfect for kids to run around. Look out for the massive colony of fruit bats hanging in the trees!
-
Afternoon: Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
-
Travel Plans Tip: We recommend visiting in the late afternoon during the Thevava (ceremony) to hear the drums and see the traditional rituals.
Evening: Enjoy a traditional Kandyan Cultural Dance Show – fire walking and drumming usually captivate children and adults alike.
Day 3: The “Harry Potter” Train to Little England
-
The Experience: Today, we swap the car for one of the world’s most scenic train rides.
-
Route: Kandy to Nanu Oya.
This blue train winds through emerald-green tea plantations, misty peaks, and waterfalls. It’s an iconic experience. We book Reserved Seats to ensure your family travels in comfort.
Afternoon: Arrive in Nuwara Eliya. Known as “Little England,” the weather here is cool and crisp. Visit a working tea factory where kids can see how tea leaves are processed and maybe even try plucking some themselves!
Stay: A colonial-style cottage or hotel with a fireplace.
Day 4: Misty Mountains to Wild Jungles
-
Morning: A relaxed breakfast in the cool air. Visit Gregory Lake for a quick boat ride or a pony ride.
-
The Drive: Descend from the hills towards the wild south (approx. 4 hours).
We head towards Yala National Park. As you descend, watch the landscape change from green hills to dry jungle scrub.
Stay: A Jungle Resort or a Luxury Glamping Tent near the park entrance.
-
Why Glamping? It’s adventurous but luxurious. Kids love sleeping in a “tent” that has air-conditioning and a proper bathroom!
Day 5: The Jungle Book Comes Alive
-
Activity: Morning or Afternoon Jeep Safari in Yala National Park.
Yala is famous for having the highest density of leopards in the world. Keep your eyes peeled for spots in the trees! Even if the elusive leopard hides, you are almost guaranteed to see elephants, peacocks, crocodiles, and wild boars.
-
Travel Plans Tip: For families with very young children (under 5), we might recommend Udawalawe National Park instead, as it is smaller and has a higher guarantee of seeing elephants up close without long waits.
Day 6: Sun, Sand & Turtles
-
The Drive: Head west along the coastline to Bentota or Hikkaduwa (approx. 3 hours).
It’s time to relax. We choose Bentota for families because the ocean here is generally calmer and safer for swimming compared to other surf beaches.
Afternoon Activity: Visit a Turtle Hatchery. Kids can hold baby turtles and learn about conservation. It is an educational and heartwarming experience.
Stay: A beachfront resort with a large swimming pool and kids’ club.
Day 7: The Historic Fort & Sunset
-
Morning: Relax by the pool or try some water sports in the Bentota river (jet skiing or a mangrove boat safari).
-
Afternoon: A short drive to Galle Fort.
This UNESCO World Heritage site is a 16th-century Dutch fortress that feels like a European village dropped into the tropics. It is car-free, safe, and incredibly walkable.
-
Do this: Walk the ramparts at sunset. Buy some homemade gelato. Shop for unique souvenirs in the cobbled streets.
Day 8: Departure
Depending on your flight time, enjoy a final Sri Lankan breakfast (hoppers and fruit) before your private transfer back to the airport via the Southern Expressway (approx. 1.5 – 2 hours).
